On a practical level, individuals within churches will offer free rides for people who do not have adequate transportation in order to help them get to recovery meetings, medical appointments, court appearances, probation appointments, church, and work. We envision this as an individual transporting someone with whom they will develop a relationship, not a formal van or bus ministry. Providing rides will facilitate relationship development, provide accountability, enhance spiritual development, enhance sobriety, draw people into a Christian community, reduce recidivism through facilitating probation and court appearances, enhance employment, reduce overdoses, and grow the church.
Our goal is to provide inexpensive housing, short or long term, for individuals who require housing primarily due to substance misuse issues, recent release from incarceration, or both. Residents will include both individuals living with substance misuse issues (mentees) and others who either do not have a history of addiction or who are very far along in their recovery (mentors), hopefully in approximately equal numbers. Many sober living houses only house people in recovery or primarily people in early recovery, with one or two “house parents.” This is preferred to homelessness or living with active drug users, but it is limited in the ability to help a person to develop life skills as most of their interactions are with others who lack those life skills and are at frequent risk of relapse. The goal is to provide a community of individuals who provide accountability and assist one another in skill building in a supportive environment that will enable people to transition into living independently as productive citizens.
Our goal is to help people with substance misuse issues to prepare for and find gainful employment. This may be through transportation to job interviews and jobs (Uplift Rides), residential community support (Uplift Housing), job coaching, referral to education and training resources, or through referral to other agencies. This also may take the form of developing small businesses such as lawn care, home repairs, furniture moving, or other endeavors that could help someone to earn money in a supervised environment.
